The influence of social support, religiosity, and spirituality on the decision to leave (DTL) and the barriers to leaving (DTL Score) an abusive relationship in African American females, who experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) within the past 12 months, was examined. Spirituality and support group theory was proposed as a conceptual framework in the study (Jacinto, Turnage, & Cook, 2010). In this exploratory quantitative cross-sectional research study, I hypothesized that: (a) religiosity (organizational and non-organizational) and DTL are positively correlated; (b) social support (from family and from friends) and DTL are positively correlated; (c) social support mediates the relationship between religiosity and the DTL Score; and (d) that social support moderates the relationship between spirituality and the DTL Score. One hundred seventy women from Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta participated in the study. Analyzing the data involved correlation analysis, logistic regression, and mediation/moderation analysis. Results showed a significant positive correlation (p = .02) between organizational religiosity and the DTL; however, non-organizational religiosity was not correlated with the DTL. Social support (neither family nor friend support) was not significantly correlated with a DTL. Results showed there was no statistically significant evidence of social support having a mediating effect on the relationship between organizational religiosity and the barriers of the DTL (i.e., DTL Score). Results also showed there was no statistically significant evidence of social support having a moderating effect on the relationship between spirituality and the DTL Score. Simple slopes analysis showed there was an association between spirituality and the DTL for those with relatively high levels of family support. Implications and future research directions are discussed.
