In the field of art and design education in the United States, craft materials and methods are often pushed to the side in favor of more traditional fine arts materials and methods. This is a qualitative study to investigate the possible learning outcomes and benefits of including craft in contemporary art education curricula from a socioemotional, cultural, technical, and conceptual perspective. The purpose of this study is to explore the reasons why craft should be incorporated into contemporary American art and design curriculum and the ways in which craft materials and methods can be integrated into a curriculum. Craft, for the purposes of this study, is explored through the perspective of materials and techniques. Rather than examining media and methods that have been consistently accepted as part of the fine art world for centuries such as painting and drawing, I explore artistic practices like weaving, bookbinding, embroidery, and jewelry-making in the context of art education. The main question I seek to answer is: what are the possible learning outcomes and benefits of utilizing craft materials in an art education setting? In order to support this question, I also ask what learning objectives can be found in the craft lessons of currently practicing art teachers, why art teachers choose to incorporate craft into their curriculum, and how students respond to craft-based lessons. This study uses narrative interviews from four currently practicing public school art teachers who incorporate craft into their curriculum. This research illustrates that when engaging in craft-based lessons, benefits for students encompass mind, body and spirit. Students are able to attain conceptual understandings about visual art and other subjects, they learn new technical and utilitarian skills as they engage in the physical work of craft, and they gain the social-emotional benefits of working with craft materials.
