Many critics of traditional museums call them "mausoleums", or frozen spaces where heritage stagnates. This critique is because of issues in the museum world in recent years of reduced engagement, along with complaints of museums being too "clinical" to properly show off the artefacts within. Museums are traditionally places for alternative education from the school system about history, science, art, and many other subjects. But as technology has advanced to improve education methods in the classroom, museums have stayed overall the same, to the point of becoming out of date. The plan for this study is to examine how using hands on exhibits and other forms of direct interaction with more than just sight can help improve on education within museums, and increase engagement. I will be using a variety of case studies from "alternative" museums, such as living museums, educational escape rooms, and more unique experiences such as the Yorvick tours. A specific focus will be on the unique case of Button Farm, where I was directly involved in combining heritage-based education and interactivity to create an escape room centered around the Underground Railroad. I will examine how techniques used in these facilities can be adapted for more traditional museums, and how some already have.
