The media has evolved to become a powerful entity that has the ability to shape and construct attitudes and behaviors in society, as it has become a means to project an image of the social climate. One of the more recent prominent dynamics displayed throughout the media are stories related to African American men, women, and children who have encounters with law enforcement that turn deadly. Current headlines found throughout newspapers, television, and social media read "Black [man, woman, child] slain by white cop." There are countless stories that would suggest African Americans are not safe when they have interactions with an entity comprised of individuals who are understood to be the people responsible for serving and protecting. Several implications arise with the recent topic regarding race relations between African Americans and European Americans in the United States, which is a complex topic that spans over 400 years. This present study examined the minimally researched topic of how media influences people's perception of reality and the ways in which these perceptions affect psychological functioning. This study seeks to understand the perceptions of people from different racial backgrounds to determine if people who identify as African American and people who do not identify as African American are psychologically affected by being exposed to one minority community being victimized by the police. The results of the present study indicated that generally the participants experienced increased anxiety following the viewing of a media clip of a compilation of images of police brutality against African American individuals. Differences of race and ethnicity had no statistical significance regarding the observation of increased anxiety levels.
