There is a consistent theme in my work from this past year that embraces all of the struggles and challenges I have endured. Place in Color is an exploration of being an immigrant living in the United States during the 21st century. In a broad sense, it is a visual reflection that depicts a sense of place, cultural identity, and diaspora through abstract visual forms.On one level, my paintings are psychological landscapes that depict the moments of moving from place to place, narrating and building a story. The works discussed and reproduced in this paper are based on my South Korean passport and reflect on living with the grief of losing a loved one.After dissecting the visual components of my Korean passport, I realized the patterns are also widely used in Korean Traditional Arts. The shape that most appealed to me looks like a rotated version of a "3." In my paintings, I zoom in to exaggerate the shape and treat it as a voice to narrate a story.
