The majority of school buildings in the United States were closed for the remainder of the 2019/2020 school year and for the beginning of the 2020/2021 school year. Despite the buildings being closed, the students continued to learn from their teachers through virtual means. This mixed-methods case study includes interviews from Maryland teachers (N = 3) from each level - Elementary, Middle, and High School, survey responses from secondary orchestra teachers in the United States, and includes the researcher's journal. After analysis and coding, the following themes were the most important (1) access to what was needed to be successful, (2) the actions of the Administration, (3) the qualities of the individual teacher, and (4) the gaps formed as a result. The following questions were explored:How have string teachers responded to online teaching? In what ways did online teaching change string pedagogy and/or lesson creation during the COVID-19 pandemic? What relationship is there between professional development and teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic?
