This thesis analyzes the exhibition, Stepping Out 10,000 Years of Walking the West at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) in Santa Fe, New Mexico in terms of decolonization of the museum space. Stepping Out was curated by Maxine McBrinn and ran from August 27, 2017 through December 30, 2018. I argue that the MIAC's approach to collections research and the exhibition practices contributes to the practice of decolonization in museums. The choice to focus on Native footwear in the exhibition, the display strategies, the information included in the text labels and additional publications, and the inclusion of work of by contemporary artists such as Teri Greeves, Eva McAdams, and Edward Wapp Jr. all contribute to this argument. The result is an exhibition that presents Indigenous North American art of the Plains and Southwest situated in the framework of Indigenous histories, ontologies, and values.
