Ascend is an exhibition addressing the struggles associated with power dynamics and suggests the ability to overcome these struggles by collaborating in democratic practices. As the world's population grows exponentially, humankind must consider modes of sustainable coexistence on the limited resources available on the planet we share. This growth led to rapid globalization, resulting in the expedition of information to the masses, the meshing of worldwide culture, religion, language, and economy, as well as an influx of tensions amongst world leaders. This tension threatens to dismantle freedom of speech and the middle class within democratic societies. Ascend seeks to distill the deep-rooted problem of classism within our contemporary climate and suggest a simple solution to this widening division in our country and world. The work presented in this exhibition promotes the idea that we are stronger when we put our differences aside and work together. It attempts to eliminate ego associated with competitive individualism and encourages tolerance between persons of differing beliefs. We, the people, may hail from backgrounds as different as day and night.1 Just like day and night, these differences are essential. The techniques employed in Ascend intend to exemplify the beauty and harmony that can exist in relationships between those with significant differences through the juxtaposition of two opposing materials: black carbon and gold leaf. This representation of light and dark was brought to life between a variety of materials as unique as the individuals that helped create them. These works represent the hard work, democratic ideation, and collaboration of over twenty individuals coming from different cultural, religious, and political backgrounds, and without even one of these voices, the work would have never been made possible.
