This study is an analysis of the value system contained in the Readers from primary school to high school, that are used in Taiwan and China. Through a content analysis, all the central and subthemes of the stories are identified and grouped into informational, behavioral, and political categories. Special attention is given to how those themes that are officially endorsed by the governments are related to the Chinese cultural and educational tradition, and the new political ideologies emerging this century in each society. The Readers used in Taiwan basically carry forward the traditional moral idealism. The values of filial piety, kindheartedness, and self-discipline are stressed at the primary school levels, and then these soft natured sentiments are fused with righteousness, and the commitment to the pursuit of an ideal social order that are emphasized in the Readers of junior and senior high schools. Although the value system promoted in the textbooks is not quite compatible with the efficiency and profit oriented modern ethos, the educators in Taiwan have continued nurturing students' minds with these classic values and sentiments from early childhood, and then let them choose their own path between tradition and modernity. The value system embedded in the Readers used in China is a combination of Marxism-Leninism and the tradition. At the elementary school level, the key emphases of the Readers are the traditional moral discipline, patriotic sentiments, and the devotion to the Party. The junior and senior high school Readers are generally composed of modern and classic works. The former are aimed at fostering the class consciousness and the loyalty to the Party, whereas the latter transmit the traditional cultural ideas and sentiments. The main issues that challenge the educators in China today are, firstly, how to manage the ontological difference between Marxism and the cultural heritage, and secondly, how to possibly integrate moral cultivation with political consciousness raising while without the cost of letting the former be subject to the fluctuating political circumstance.Subjects--Topical Terms:
