At the end of 2019, the United States was approaching nearly two years of a historic shortage of skilled labor, totaling over 7 million open jobs (United States Department of Labor, 2019b). This study sought to investigate the relationship between community college students' declared career and technical education (CTE) majors and long-term occupational projections. The study combined two disparate sources of national education and economic data to form a new, transformed data file. The Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:12/14), which tracked a cohort of students from 2011-12 through 2013-14, was be the source of the sample of students who attended public, 2-year community colleges. The BPS:12/14 data provided the information on the student's decision to major in a career and technical field as well as the individual and institution related variables. The second data set provided the current and projected jobs numbers for the years 2016 and 2026 as organized by Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) (Projections Managing Partnership, 2016). A series of logistic regression models were employed to determine the relationship between community college students' choice of major according to the CTE career cluster framework and labor market projections in corresponding occupations. In general, there was no association between the projected needs of the labor market and the decision of community college students to major in specific occupational fields. However, a negative relationship was discovered for the decision to major in Information Technology (IT). The results from this study are likely to be of interest to federal policymakers, community college CTE leaders, and business leaders with the latest authorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (2018) expecting CTE programs match the current and future needs of local economies.
