The crucial post high school outcome that drives the level of independence for persons with developmental disabilities is viable employment. Persons with developmental disabilities in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands face the risk of transitioning into adulthood without the requisite skills to become independent due to limited post high school vocational and daily living skills services. There is a gap in the research in the field of working with persons with developmental disabilities, especially in territories. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to explore how persons with developmental disabilities could acquire vocational and independent living skills in St. Thomas through Vocational Rehabilitation. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit the participants for two groups for semi structured. interviews with ten clients of Vocational Rehabilitation with developmental disabilities, and their parents or guardians. The six Vocational Rehabilitation staff were asked to complete a survey to explore post school outcomes and services for clients with developmental disabilities. Grounded theory drove the data collection from the interviews; open coding occurred simultaneously with data collection. Saturation was achieved through analysis of the data from semi-structured interviews and the written survey for the staff of Vocational Rehabilitation. The results indicated 100% of the Vocational Rehabilitation staff and ten out of eleven of the parents or guardians of the persons with developmental disabilities were in agreement for the establishment of some type of vocational day facility, more government funding, and more training for job coaches and persons with developmental disabilities. The potential implications of the results can be applied to practice and take the form of a vocational facility where job coaches and persons with developmental disabilities can receive the necessary training. Recommendations include expanding the age range of the persons and including more participants in other territories.
