This dissertation's overall goal is to broaden Western conceptions of contemporary, "post-bubble" (i.e., post-1990) manga, by discussing how these works and their cultural form ("manga" being used interchangeably in these plural and singular senses) variously express, reflect and engage with Japanese cultural anxieties, politics, social issues, and counter-cultures. While popular interest in graphic fiction has expanded with the growing world comics market, the academic study of comics from a truly global perspective has lagged. Too little critical attention has been paid to questions regarding the political and cultural weight of manga in Japanese culture, and its profound ability to broaden understandings of Japanese culture in general.In this regard, a particularly glaring gap in comics studies is the paucity of academic treatments of manga as a unique literary-cultural medium rather than as merely "Japanese comics." Among the major non-American comics markets, Japanese manga are the most popular form of comic in the world, with titles selling in the millions worldwide, and global distribution growing every year. While numerous scholarly works have discussed manga in a critical light, few of these suitably account for the cultural context of manga in Japan, nor for how this originating context may or may not be adequately communicated when manga leave Japan and are translated (in more than one sense) for various global markets.By combining comprehensive textual analysis of representative manga series with broader cultural study of Japan, this dissertation will broaden the reach of academic scholarship into manga and its Japanese cultural milieu. To say nothing of manga's ubiquity in Japan, manga (along with its screen sibling anime) has such extensive market and cultural penetration in the United States and elsewhere abroad that it arguably dwarfs the potential of Japanese movies, video games, and other forms of Japanese television to provide us with the clearest windows into Japanese cultural mindsets today. Consequently, I believe the manga form, in a way that is unique compared to other media, possesses significant power to broaden outsiders' understanding of Japan, Japanese culture, and Japanese textual culture. This dissertation will have succeeded if manga begin to be recognized as fundamental to cultural study of Japan.
