This study explores the importance of ancestry as it relates to an individual's spirituality, personal growth, and self-love. In this research I explored my ancestry to gain knowledge of the spiritual practices and art making purposes of indigenous people of Africa. African spirituality promotes creative expression through ritual, dance, music, art, and sculpture. It is feminine: nature centered, encourages happiness, supports creativity, and is a compendium of history. I also explored my ancestry through 23andMe to find the direct source of my lineage. To invoke the spiritual essence of my ancestry in my art I studied Betye Saar and Hilma af Klint who are featured because their artwork was created in a spiritual context. At the apex of this study I created a series of five larger-than-life portraits of the influential women in my life to create a narrative of how black women are seen in society. My intention is one of love and admiration.
