The availability and inclusion of arts education in the school system are in national decline. Only a little more than half of public secondary schools require coursework in the arts as a graduation requirement. As most colleges neither require it for graduation not consider it part of their core curriculum or general education classes, a college student may never set foot in an arts class unless they are majoring in an art discipline. However, research has shown the effect arts have on students' physical and mental wellbeing. Given this information, the goal of this study was to examine the effect taking an arts class has on a college student, and, more specifically, if taking an arts class affects a student's stress level in any way. For this study, student stress levels were measured using Sheldon Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), which was developed based on Lazarus's theory of stress appraisal. A quantitative approach and survey methodology were utilized with 212 undergraduate participants from universities and colleges in a Midwestern state who were surveyed at the beginning and the end of an introductory level arts course. A one way ANOVA identified a relationship with a student's post-PSS score in Arts and Science and Education majors, with participants majoring in Arts and Sciences reporting higher post-PSS scores than those participants majoring in Education. Recommendations for college students, post-secondary institutions, and policymakers are discussed, along with recommendations for future research.
