There is limited research on best instructional practices in working with immigrant students in English languagelearner classrooms. As middle school is the stage of the learning process where students start to really become grounded in preparing to succeed through high school and beyond, teachers' insights on how best to instruct this population is crucial. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to assess teachers' perceptions and opinions regarding instructional practices in middle schools for immigrant students with English as their second language. Also, the intent was to understand whether these strategies were effective in meeting federal and state mandates, improving academic achievement gaps, and overcoming barriers instructors face in teaching struggling middle school immigrant students in North Carolina. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 8 middle school teachers from a school district in eastern North Carolina. It is hoped that teachers will be able to use this study's results to adjust or improve their teaching methods to significantly increase immigrant students' ability to meet state and federal requirements for reading comprehension.
