This study examined the impact of participation in high-school athletics on the academic achievement of African-American male student-athletes during a 2010-2011 pilot year, as well as the 2016 and 2017 academic school years. Special attention was paid to STEM academic achievement. Specifically, the researcher attempted to determine whether African-American male student athletes exhibited higher academic achievement than African-American male non-student-athletes. The views of coaches and student athletes regarding the relationships between athletic participation and academic achievement were explored using interviews and surveys. The researcher used a mixed methods approach to assess the relationship between high school athletics and students' overall achievement in at-risk schools in the southeastern part United States of America. The researcher then used the results to help guide and develop a deeper understanding of how athletics might impact student achievement in STEM courses. Triangulation was used to ensure the validity and support for this study.
