For musicians, albums are the culmination of great time, effort, thought, and ideas to create a project for consumers to enjoy. Album cover artwork is a very significant contributor in selling an album both in terms of marketing and public impact. As the visual focal point for the music, it is important for musicians, graphic designers, photographers, and other visual artists to understand what cover art encompasses. This thesis explores why album cover art is so important to an album. In addition to a brief history on cover art, how and why cover art is a necessity is discussed. Also, the significance of this study to the field of graphic design is explored by providing information on processes that may be useful to designers. Eleven redesigns of album covers were created and shared within the thesis content to express an understanding and application of the knowledge gained through research conducted on the subject matter.
