The present thesis attempts to explore the relationship between Dong Zhongshu's literary writing and his thought, whereby revealing the significant transition in the political, academic, intellectual and cultural arenas of the Former Han dynasty. In my opinion, previous studies of Dong Zhongshu have four shortcomings. First of all, many scholars fail to go beyond summarizing and analyzing Dong Zhongshu's thought. Secondly, existing research does not have an adequate understanding of the entire environment under which literature and political thinking developed in the Han dynasty. Thirdly, there exists one-sided conceptions of Dong Zhongshu in the academia. Fourthly, it is difficult to find a breakthrough point in the process of research. The planned research attempts to probe into the thought-world of Dong Zhongshu by investigating the style and logic of his writing. Generally speaking, Dong Zhongshu's writing exerted a great influence on the Han dynasty. His essays, which were committed to deeply examine names and analyze definitions, had a style of profoundness and grace. A further exploration of his writing style can shed light on his ambitious political agenda, which he dedicated to the cultivation of the people's disposition. The first chapter focuses on Jia Yi. Jia Yi's writing is a combination of passion and wisdom, which can be regarded as a representative of the Former Han dynasty. The second chapter explores Dong Zhongshu's writing. Based on the reasoning and principles of the Confucian Classics, he created a logical, clear and refined writing style, which eventually became the mainstream of the official writing style. The last two chapters intend to present Dong Zhongshu's political ideas on the Han empire's legal system, and to reveal his pursuit of righteousness. The empire was ruled and managed by examining the relationship between the Names and the Forms at that time. However, Dong Zhongshu tried to advocate an all-round institutional reform with Confucian ethics. In this way, he dedicated himself to cultivating people's disposition and building a country through righteousness.
