Many approaches to music education are utilized in classrooms today. The Kodaly approach, based on the teaching of Hungarian musician Zoltan Kodaly, utilizes quality folk music of the students' culture to teach musical concepts. Kodaly (1974) referred to folk music as the musical "mother tongue" (p. 131). Kodaly emphasized developing the singing voice and musical ear. "You have an instrument in your throat, with a tone more beautiful than any violin, if only you will use it" (p. 123). Kodaly noted the words and folk melodies as inseparable from the motions, dances, and other associated movements (Choksy, 1981, p. 40). Since its origins, inclusion of movement within the Kodaly approach has been an important emphasis. Within this project, I provide rationale for the importance of including movement as an integral part of a Kodaly music classroom and provide examples of how to integrate movement through developmental and pedagogical activities.
