This applied dissertation highlights issues that African-American female veterans encounter in their transition from military to civilian work life. African-American female veterans who were honorably discharged face a broad range of obstacles in the transition from military to civilian life. They lack adequate support from the American government and veteran organizations. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine the experiences of, and barriers faced by, African-American female veterans transitioning to civilian employment. This was a qualitative research study, which sought to understand the participants' experiences and provides insights into the problem. Military transition theory provided the theoretical foundation for this study. The strategy of inquiry was phenomenology, an approach that concentrates on various structures of experiences and participants' consciousness. The research question was: What are the lived experiences and barriers of African-American females transitioning from military service to the civilian workforce? Participants were eight African-American female veterans, age 24 through 50, looking for work, honorably discharged from the United States military, and not disabled at the time of military release. Participants were given questionnaires about their career transition activities. Data analysis consisted of coding of transcripts and notes. Findings came from discussion feedback, questionnaires, interviews, one-on-one and group sessions. Participants reported being ill prepared for accepting civilian work due to lack of required skill sets in the civilian work environment. More of the government's budget could be allocated to transition services tailored to military veterans, and a division could be set up for African-American female veterans. Online self-paced programs and support groups could guide African-American female veterans in the transition process. African-American female veterans are eager to share their experiences, garner support, and contribute to program development that directly impacts their transition and career outlook in the civilian world. Researchers may survey a broader sample of this population to further explore relevant issues. The Veterans Affairs could coordinate with the federal government to develop and implement effective transition programs, involving veterans, especially those who are challenged, including African-American female veterans, in shaping the programs, drawing upon their experience of challenges in the transitioning process.
