At the age of 25, Naoki Higashida is the author of more than twenty books. He is most well known for his international bestseller The Reason I Jump (2007/2016). Although Higashida is labeled nonverbal autistic and has difficulty using speech as his primary means of communication, he uses writing in his daily life and to describe his experiences through published narrative works. The traditional view of autism is based on a medical deficit model that focuses on language and communication deficiencies and repetitive or restrictive behaviours (O'Reilly, Lester, & Muskett, 2017). However, Higashida's ongoing conversation with his readers counters the perception of autistic individuals as unable to understand and respond to emotions and language. This study uses a discourse analytic framework to explore three of Higashida's books, surfacing the linguistic patterns in the Japanese text. These patterns and the context surrounding them reveal the discursive concepts of agency (Al Zidjaly, 2015; Bucholtz & Hall, 2005), interactional identity (Bucholtz & Hall, 2008; Carbaugh, 1996; Shotter, 1997), and framing and reframing (Tannen, 1979). Through this analysis of Higashida's interaction with his audience of readers, Higashida is shown to influence others and to be influenced by others. He is also able to direct the dialogue around autism and disability. This and other research on autistic narratives can be used to develop a model of autism rooted in communicative competence (Sterponi & Kirby, 2016) and centered on empowerment and agency (Al Zidjaly, 2015; Grue, 2016; Hacking, 2009). In addition, future research including the viewpoint of autistics can serve as a tool to highlight and to integrate the external perceptions of autism with its internal experience and to promote the inclusion of autistics in the collective conversation around autism.
