The principal object of study, of this doctoral thesis, concerns the charting, reviewing and proposal for the employment of a genre of public art, based on the relations of interference between sculpture and architecture. Such relations have conceived works and models that fuse the two proposed fields, for which the term arch-art has been suggested by theorists of this line of thought, such as Javier Maderuelo and Marti Peran, among others. Although the relation between these fields was recognised and studied throughout the history of art, it was only in the twentieth century that the phenomena, defining these issues, gained significant attention. Mainly, a contemporary panorama was produced, detailing the artistic practices of the last thirty years, of the contributions of the innovative qualities of said hybrid events in the public sphere. A study was undertaken of noteworthy works, and the different contexts and scenarios in which they episodically emerged. As the products of professional creations, by as much artists as architects, these validate the concept of arch-art as an artistic representation with uniquely defining characteristics. We propose that said characteristics constitute a language which amplifies and extends the actual concept of sculpture and vice-versa. The nature of contemporary cities has allowed for the emergence of arch-art genre works in public spaces. These creations utilize the metaphor of habitability while functionality, and reflect on the possibilities of a public art that, through social commentary, impacts its surroundings.
