The relationship between university sponsored student's athletics and academic achievement has been an evolving trend of discussion both at the high school and college level. However, a dearth of literature illustrates this relationship at the college level. This study investigated the importance of college athletics and whether participation in intercollegiate athletics could predict academic success. With many Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) failing to achieve this required Academic Progress Rate (APR), there is the need to find out why most of these African American athletes perform poorly in academics. The study utilized a mixed method approach. The release of NCAA APR scores in May 2015 showed 25 athletic teams had not met academic standards, and 15 of those were teams from HBCU's. Of the teams whose APR scores did not reach the required 930 in the 2012-2013 season, just 6% of them were not from HBCU institutions in 2012-2013 and 4 % in 2013-2014, based on NCAA's national and sport-group APR averages and trends. Thus, the purpose of this research is to determine the effects of university sponsored student athletics on academic performance in HBCUs using the mixed methods approach. Findings indicated a statistically significant difference between academic performance of athletes based on gender. Carrying out the multiple regression analysis for the data, result showed that there was difference between the GPA scores of student athletes and non-athletes who are HBCU students. New educational theoretical models should be developed to train and educate student-athletes. Further research will engage the use of experimental mix methods procedure using pre and post-test conditions along with exploratory research design and method using secondary data sources.
