James A. Michener's career in education was examined in this study. A major focus was directed to his contributions as a social studies teacher. Each segment of Michener's educational career was investigated between 1907 (birth) to 1949, the point at which he resigned his job at the Macmillan Company. The later years of Michener's career (1949-present) were also examined during which time as a novelist, he has also acted as teacher. The study reveals the nature and character of Michener's educational experiences during his years of schooling. It further provides an investigation of his high school teaching years in Pennsylvania at The Hill School as well as The George School in Pennsylvania where he participated in the Eight-Year Study. Careful attention is given to Michener's professional years at The Colorado State College of Education and Harvard University wherein he taught and engaged in graduate work. His role in the National Council For the Social Studies as a member of the publications committee in 1939 and as chairman of that committee from 1940-1941 is thoroughly explored. Five major themes in Michener's educational publications are identified: the experimental social studies curriculum; idealism in education; the unit method; the in-service development of social studies teachers; and life-experience education. The study addresses Michener's reasons for leaving the field of education and how, as novelist, he has continued to function as an educator. The investigator used a historical method of research incorporating oral history sessions with James Michener, his colleagues, and students. The special Michener collection was reviewed at Swarthmore College as was the National Council For the Social Studies Archives at Columbia Teachers College. The major findings indicate Michener was deeply influenced by the progressive educationists, an interest which flowered during his involvement with the Eight-Year Study. He adopted the ideals of the Progressive Education Movement and pursued topics of interest to him and his students in his early years as an educator as well as in his later years as an author. As novelist, Michener has sustained his perception of himself as a teacher and has provided knowledge for innumerable pupils, his readers.Subjects--Topical Terms:
