There is indirect evidence that suggests that implicit racial biases may contribute to the differential treatment of Black students in schools. There is, however, clear evidence that Black students are punished more severely than their White counterparts for relatively minor, subjective offenses such as "disobedience", "insubordination", and "defiance". With regards to subjective offenses, the teacher has flexibility in the interpretation of the situation. Ambiguous situations are poised for the arousal of implicit bias in the interpretation of the students' behavior. The most widely used measure for the study of implicit bias is the Implicit Association Test (IAT). The IAT compares the relative strength of the association of target concepts and positive versus negative valence by requiring subjects to look at pictures of faces and positive or negative words and respond by pressing keys on a keyboard. The current study sought to discover if qualitative data could be used to identify implicit racial bias in teachers, and if so, what themes would emerge that may indicate implicit bias. Through the use of interview and observation, themes emerged regarding explicit versus implicit bias, stereotypes about Black students, judgments about Black families and low expectations for Black students. Results indicated that qualitative measures could be used to identify implicit bias in teachers.
