Thesis (M.S.)--The William Paterson University of New Jersey, 2008.
This study investigated the severity of hearing loss, phonological awareness skills, and age as predictors to reading success in school-aged children. Past research studies have evaluated many variables when predicting reading success in deaf children; however, limited research has been conducted on hearing-impaired children. A total of 17 children participated in this study, ranging in age from 6;9 to 14;0. All participants had mild to severe hearing loss in the better ear and were fitted with appropriate amplification devices. Two standardized assessments were administered, which included the Test of Auditory Processing Skills-Third Edition (TAPS-3; Martin & Brownell, 2005) and the Gray Oral Reading Test-Fourth Edition (GORT-4; Wiederholt & Bryant, 2001). A multiple regression analysis was performed revealing that phonological awareness skills and chronological age did not impact reading skills, which contradicted previous research studies. However, results of this study were supported by previous research findings, which indicated that severity of hearing loss did not impact reading success in school-aged children.
