Because teachers are in a pivotal position in the elementary school classroom, it is important to know what they think about themselves, their work and their students. The purpose of this study was to discover and describe the images which experienced elementary school teachers have of their work and themselves as represented by that work. Images were defined as mental constructs used by people to shape and define their world. This study has significance in that it represents the teacher's voice in the research which describes and explains teacher thinking and provides a deeper understanding for teachers, teacher educators and researchers of the principles and beliefs that guide classroom practice. The design of this study was drawn from naturalistic inquiry methods. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with nineteen experienced elementary school teachers. These practicing teachers had at least five years teaching experience on the elementary school level (K-8). The teachers ranged in experience from 5 to 25 years and taught in urban or suburban public schools. There was an even mix of teachers at the primary, elementary and upper grade levels. The analysis of the data was based upon grounded theory using the constant comparative method. Ten common categories or themes were identified, each composed of subthemes which both defined and limited the meaning of the larger category as it was used in this study. The ten themes describe teachers as: Hard Workers, Guides, Professionals, Personalities, Subordinates, Creators of the Body Electric, Curriculum Makers, Ciphers, Collaborators and Perquisitors. Instead of a clearly defined vision of teaching, teachers have images of themselves and their work which are often conflicting and which represent both the complex nature of the human beings who engage in the interactions in the classroom and the complicated nature of teaching itself. The many dilemmas and contradictions lead to further questions and offer an invitation for more inquiry. They serve as a heuristic device for thinking about and looking at issues relevant to teachers, teacher educators and researchers.Subjects--Topical Terms:
