This research explores how the culture and spiritual beliefs of the Celts, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings inspired the development of their unique artistic styles and the symbolic messages of their animal imagery. A general discussion of each group's society, religion, and art is followed by a closer examination of the social importance of animals and the roles they played in religious worship and practice. After considering the nuances and defining characteristics of each style of animal art created by the Celts, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings, the influences of culture and religion on the symbolism and development of each group's animal imagery is investigated. The culmination of this research is the creation of a series of woodblock prints of seven animals with personal significance in a distinctive visual style inspired by the art of Celts, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings. Detailed explanations of the social and religious associations of each animal, the historical inspiration behind each print, and my personal cultural and spiritual background conclude this study.
