Instructional design is the creation of products through the use of theory and processes. Instructional design has evolved over time with the largest change due to technology. As technology has changed everyday life, it has also changed learning. This shift in learning has created the evolution of instructional design, creating a disconnect between what instructional designers are trained for and what they need to know. The demand for instructional designers has led to the development of instructional design programs in higher education, which lack the knowledge of what is expected from instructional designers in the field, due to the roles evolving and a new demand by employers. Eight instructional designers' experiences were examined, with elements of the ID field in varying employment settings, a commonality of approaches created understanding practical roles of instructional designers and provided insight for institutions to utilize in their instructional design and technology programs, or in on-site trainings. Qualitative research utilizing a semi-structured interview provided in depth knowledge into the instructional designers' roles and use of instructional design models.
