Thesis (M.Ed.)--Saint Mary's College of California, 2018.
This research study investigated how one-to-one technology impacted student engagement in a first-grade classroom with a focus on the effectiveness of using iPads during math instruction. The research questions were: How does technology integration in the classroom impact student engagement? How are students engaged in their learning with the use of one-to-one technology during math instruction? How does student engagement with one-to-one technology correlate to student performance during math instruction? Math lessons were given to six focus students twice per week using the program Splash Math on iPads. Data were collected through surveys, informal interviews, field notes, and performance reports, and were analyzed through summative coding. Results indicated students were engaged in the initial implementation of Splash Math, but their interest decreased over time. Student attitudes toward math and technology correlated to student engagement when learning math on iPads; and students performed comparably with Splash Math reports and iReady scores.
