Pan Yue (247-300) and Lu Ji (261-303) were the leading writers in the late third century. The significance of these writers in the Chinese literary tradition has been relatively overlooked in both Chinese and Western Sinological scholarship, a neglect that is unwarranted, for Pan and Lu distinguished themselves in many of the most important literary genres. They merit particular attention as the leading innovators of the poetic tradition as practiced during the third century. An examination of their work reveals the high degree of innovation and influence that defines their literary response and craft. In evaluating the extant literary corpus of Pan, Lu, and some of their more significant contemporaries, it is evident that the works have been incorrectly viewed as lacking in substance, innovation and influence by many literary critics since the Tang.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The many works by these two men can be organized into various different subgenres, but basic to the works of these writers is the literary response to "displacement." Human nature generally is drawn to stability, and when divorced from confines of familiarity, a sense of disorientation or dislocation, often geographical as well as emotional, sets in. In light of the concept of displacement as a literary catalyst, the hopes and failures in official life or the emotions invoked in parting or mourning all could stimulate, even demand, that the poet in Pan Yue and Lu Ji express their responses to such displacement. This study examines the literary responses of Pan and Lu with a focus on the predominant themes concerning the dilemma of service and retreat, as well as the prevalent topics of separation, fate and death. The late third century was a notable example of literary reform, and Pan and Lu sought to surpass their literary predecessors and to achieve expression with a new level of force. The innovative craft employed in the expression of their literary responses has been analyzed with attention given to their inclination for formalism and experimentation.
