The Twenty-eight Bushu are a set of life-size wood sculptures belonging to the Rengeoin in Kyoto, a structure popularly called Sanjusangendo, the "Temple of Thirty-three Bays." They are attendants to the main icon, the Thousand-armed Kannon, a form of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. Although the attendants number twenty-eight in scriptures, the group at Sanjusangendo consists of thirty statues that are neither signed nor dated, but generally attrib- uted to the Kei school of sculpture, the most prominent school of the Kamakura period (1185-1333).Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The purpose of this study is to understand the Twenty-eight Bushu iconographically, and to determine when, and by whom, they were made. In order to establish a context for the sculptures, the history of the Rengeoin from construction in 1164 to restoration in 1254 is reviewed in Chapter I. Chapter II is a consideration of the Thousand-armed Kannon, the development of the deity in China and its following in Japan. Literary sources that name the Twenty-eight Bushu are described in Chapter III, Part A. Part B is a catalogue of the physical characteristics and iconic character of each statue, and Part C of Chapter III is an analysis of these findings. Finally, the sculptures are examined stylistically to determine authorship and the date of manufacture. Part A is a review of the Kei school style; Part B is an analysis of the Twenty-eight Bushu and a comparison with other Kei school works.
520 $a This study shows that the Twenty-eight Bushu are a Chinese iconography transmitted to Japan. Their appearances reflect the naturalistic and decorative features of Chinese Sung dynasty art (960-1279), modified by the Japanese Kei school by the sculptor, Tankei (1173-1256).
