From the fourth to sixth centuries was a golden age of Maitreya cult in Chinese history. The purposes of this dissertation are to examine the historical background, teaching aspects and sources of the Chinese Maitreya belief, and the origins and development of the iconography of Chinese Maitreya imagery. 520 $a From the fourth to sixth centuries was a golden age of Maitreya cult in Chinese history. The purposes of this dissertation are to examine the historical background, teaching aspects and sources of the Chinese Maitreya belief, and the origins and development of the iconography of Chinese Maitreya imagery. For investigating these aspects, my study is divided into three parts.
520 $a Part One, including three chapters, is devoted to literary evidence of the Maitreya cult in early China. The study of this part indicates that the popularity of this faith in early China was resulted from teachers' zealous propagation, royal patronage in the north, and desires for rebirths in paradises, and major teaching aspects of this cult were Pure Land belief, meditation, and the study of the Lotus Sutra.
520 $a Part Two, consisting of three chapters, is concerned with the three major sources of the Chinese Maitreya cult and its art, namely, India, Gandhara, and Chinese Central Asia. Each chapter is composed of two sections. One deals with literary evidence, and the other is regarding iconographic analyses. The study of Part Two shows that the belief in Maitreya existed in the West as early as the second century B.C., it remained important in the sixth century A.D., and two essential aspects of this cult were Pure Land belief and meditation.
520 $a Part Three deals with Maitreya images in China dated before the seventh century A.D. This part contains two chapters. One is to point out western prototypes of Chinese Maitreya imagery, while the other is to focus on Chinese innovational elements reflecting Chinese own emphases of the Maitreya belief.
520 $a The dissertation concludes by remarking that the sources of Chinese Maitreya cult and its art were India, Gandhara, and Chinese Central Asia, but Chinese Maitreya cult and its art also had their own characteristics of which the most notable one was the study of the Lotus Sutra.
