Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 1982.
This dissertation discusses a literary genre of the Han dynasty--the letter (shu). The letter, which germinated during the Ch'un-ch'iu and Chan-Kuo periods, was firmly established as a literary genre with the designation of shu during the Han. Although this dissertation is generally limited to the study of personal letters, some memorials and official letters have been taken into consideration. Attempts have been made to explore the various phases of the letters in order to demonstrate the significant role played by the Han in the evolution of letter writing. Attention has aso been paid to the style of these letters in terms of rhetorical devices, parallelism and language in order to demonstrate the change of style in prose from simple to ornate and from irregular meter to a more regular meter toward the later part of the Han.Subjects--Topical Terms:
