Lien-chu is essentially a set of aphorisms in dialogue framework, written primarily in four and six-syllable lines in parallel prose. The major rhetorical device of lien-chu is chain argument which is presented in the form of premises followed by a conclusion. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine lien-chu, a rhetorical genre which flourished in the Six Dynasties. The origin, structure and content will be discussed together with two annotated translations of two major authors, Lu Chi and Yu Hsin.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Content will be analyzed in two aspects, theme and argument. The theme of lien-chu has evolved from discourses on the art of good government, on to moral suasions, and eventually to frustration of oneself. To be effectively convincing in expounding themes of the early lien-chu, lien-chu makes extensive use of analogies in its argument.

The rigid structure of lien-chu is analyzed in terms of the application of allusions and statements. Other distinct rhetoric features of lien-chu such as parallelism and rhyme are examined. Parallelism in the lien-chu includes two types, simple and compound with a tendency towards increasing compound parallelism. The syntactic parallelism is reinforced by the rhythmic patterns. Lien-chu are usually rhymed at the end of the fourth and eighth lines. Besides this regular rhyming system, linguistic structure also augments the function of rhyme.

There are two major theories on the origin of lien-chu. Scholars of the Liang dynasty believed that Yang Hsiung originated the form. Later scholars claimed the genre originated in the earlier writings of Han Fei-tzu. My conclusion is that Yang Hsiung originated lien-chu, since he was the first person to employ the term lien-chu as a title. The earlier writings which share some characteristics of lien-chu should be considered as embryonic lien-chu, or antecedents of the mature lien-chu.
