This dissertation is a monograph of the Ch'ing artist Chao Chih-ch'ien (1829-1884). The first chapter describes the circumstances of his life and personality, based on information gleaned from Chao Chih-ch'ien's private correspondence, poems and inscriptions. The remaining four chapters present a chronological discussion of his life's work in calligraphy and painting, and relate it to sources in the past, his own milieu and following artists. This information is presented for the first time in English, and is based on letters by Chao Chih-ch'ien hitherto neglected by both Chinese and Japanese art historians. The dissertation establishes Chao Chih-ch'ien as a major artist of the late nineteenth century.Subjects--Topical Terms:
