Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 1991.
This thesis examines the poetry of Su Shih as an integral part of his activity of pursuing the Way. Since for Su Shih the Way comes into existence in the individual act of interpretation, literature (wei-wen) too can be a way of being and of becoming (wei-jen), a way of embodying the Way. This is particularly true of the poetry that he composed during his life in exile, first in Huangchou (1080-4) and later in Huichou and Hainan Island (1094-1101), for it was in those periods when he was out of office that Su Shih found in his poetry an alternative expression of his Confucian commitment.Subjects--Topical Terms:
