Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Kansas, 1988.
Among the contributions of the Mongol Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) to the Chinese culture was the stimulation of the wen-jen hua (literati painting) expressive modes. Although not directly involved in the formulation of these modes, the Mongol rule had the effect of instigating new directions in art among Chinese scholars who were the main proponents of Chinese literati painting. Wang Meng (ca. 1308-1385), one of the four late Yuan masters, serves as a good example in the understanding of this development. The present study investigates the cognitive experience of Wang Meng as an artist through examining his depiction of scholars' retreats, the most persistent theme in painting of the Yuan dynasty. These eremitic paintings of Wang Meng fully demonstrate a new awareness in topography by late Yuan scholar-painters. A significant portion of this study is devoted to investigate the interplay of topographical aspects and personal context in the stylistic formulation of Wang Meng's art. A further investigation of the evolution of this theme within the expressive vocabulary of Wang Meng succinctly portrays Wang Meng's development as an artist. His treatment of some special motifs and his perception of the political-literary iconography of the pictures of scholars' retreats add to a fuller understanding of this late Yuan master. The approach of this study is designed to confront the syncretistic nature of the pictures of scholars' retreats in late Yuan. The study of context prepares the stage for the study of style, while the study of content highlights the detailed scenario by which to fully appreciate the art for of Wang Meng.Subjects--Topical Terms:
