Tung Ch'i-ch'ang (1555-1636) was the frequent subject in the study of Chinese painting, especially his famous theory of the Northern and Southern schools. Recently, his paintings enhance attention due to their abstract and modern quality. However, it has not been clear what the background of Tung's paintings was. 520 $a Interestingly enough, Tung Ch'i-ch'ang was highly influenced by traditions, so to speak, by ancient masters. Tung usually stated that the creation comes from consistent study of ancient masterpieces. Among many ancient masters, Tung particularly favored Tung Yuan, who was active in the tenth century. Tung Ch'i-ch'ang left many comments on the style of Tung Yuan that he perceived. Based on these actual statements, I tried to find what kind of aspects Tung Ch'i-ch'ang was influenced by Tung Yuan. My method was to see Tung Ch'i-ch'ang's paintings through Tung's own eyes rather than through modern scholarship.
520 $a In analyzing Tung Yuan's influence on Ch'i-ch'ang's paintings, I adopted three aspects from Tung's statements: textual strokes, misty effects, tree forms. Tung Ch'i-ch'ang applied Tung Yuan's idiom into his paintings in a certain area through the process of transformation. At first glance it is not conspicuous to find Tung Yuan's impact. Nonetheless, Tung Yuan was a vital source for Tung Ch'i-ch'ang in formulating his own unique style. My study would be a was to approach Tung Ch'i-ch'ang's complicated forms of landscape paintings.
