Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 1988.
The "Orff-Schulwerk" is a model for teaching music, known primarily through its application with children. The pedagogical tools--speech, singing, movement, and specified instrumental resources--are used in a unique integration of exploratory, improvisatory, creative, and performance activities. The intent is to develop inherent musicality organically from spoken language, utilizing exemplary heritage material.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The Schulwerk model has engendered considerable global interest, having been introduced in over fifty countries. Transplantation raises many questions of adaptation. Languages with characteristics differing from the European original, and cultural standards regarding factors such as movement behavior and student/teacher interaction, strongly affect implementation. Perhaps foremost, the amount and type of Euroamerican influence currently operative, both musically and culturally, significantly influences the nature of adaptation.

After surveying the history and characteristics of the original Schulwerk model and the general picture of global dispersal, this study focuses on transplantations in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand. Applications are examined from time of introduction through current status, with relevant information concerning public school music and indigenous musical traditions considered. Pertinent published material is reviewed, with analysis of representative musical examples.

Finally, conclusions are drawn relative to the transplantation process as observed in these cultures. It appears that the primary mode of application continues to be the European model, relatively intact, with certain adjustments in repertoire and procedures. Given the long-standing influence of Western music in these cultures, this situation may well be viewed as appropriate. Efforts to restructure the content presented through the pedagogy to a deeper indigenous base are rare. Cultural factors may well render any thoroughgoing realignment impossible and, at least in certain cases, inadvisable.
