This study was concerned only with academic problems pertaining to assimilation that Chinese students face at the community college level; specifically, language, culture, and emotional support systems. Excluded were problems related to courtship, marriage, family, economics, social relationships, and the like.

Method. A 50-item perception questionnaire was administered face-to-face to over 200 students of Chinese descent. Subjects for the study were selected from two community colleges in the greater Los Angeles area (i.e., Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, California and East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, California). One-factor ANOVA was used to analyze the results (p $<$.05).

Results. Surprisingly, no cultural conflict was found between the foreign-born and the American-born groups. Although the statistics showed that there were no significant differences in family and counseling support, they did indicate that there were significant differences in academic motivation.

Foreign-born students performed well at school. They had financial support from their families. They appreciated education and believed that education is the best way to become successful. No students failed, and only a few had major difficulties in academic performance due to cultural conflict. Statistical analysis of the questionnaires showed that there were significant differences between foreign-born and American-born Chinese students in language and motivation, none in support and attitudes toward school, and only minor differences in cultural perception.
