In studying the patronage of artists in Chinese history, we encounter the difficulty of the scarcity of textual evidence, especially in dealing with artists of scholarly background. Artists of the eighteenth century, in this aspect, seem to have been more relaxed and outspoken than their predecessors. They discussed the sale or exchange of their art work with less restraint and disclosed the economic aspects of their life more openly. The rise of Yangchow painting in the eighteenth century coincided with the period of greatest prosperity of the city, implying that the available capital invested in art works may have promoted a local school of painting. As eighteenth century Yangchow painting exhibits certain qualities that distinguish it from painting of the previous centuries, we speculate that the taste of the patrons may have influenced the artists' aesthetic choices. Therefore, eighteenth century Yangchow painting offers a good case for studying the pattern of patronage and its relationship with the economic life of the artist, as well as its influence on the style of painting.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This dissertation begins by presenting the two Ma brothers of Yangchow, who were among the most notable, prominent patrons of all kinds of cultural activities in eighteenth century Yangchow; they represent those art patrons who obtained both wealth and high education. The study of this high level of society reveals that there were art patrons on other levels who were the major consumers of Yangchow painting. Four artists, Fang Shih-shu, Hang Shen, Chin Nung and Cheng Hsieh, are selected to demonstrate the spectrum of the socio-economic background of eighteenth century Yangchow artists. It is through the study of these four very popular artists in Yangchow that we learn about the process of commercialization of painting and the professionalization of painters in the eighteenth century, as well as the influence of these non-art factors on the styles and subject matter of their paintings. In order to accommodate the tastes of a widely varied audience, eighteenth century Yangchow artists created an art that combines the values of literati painting with those of popular art.
