This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between Taiwanese students' TOEFL scores and communicative competence. Sixty students who were preparing to study in the United States participated. They were administered four measures of communicative competence (CC): three oral tasks including an interview, picture-description and reporting, and a written functional test specifically constructed to tap sociolinguistic competence. All measures were rated and scored by qualified native speakers. Ratings of the three oral tests were totaled to form a CC total. All subjects took the TOEFL test in August, 1986 and later reported their scores to the researcher.Subjects--Topical Terms:

TOEFL scores and CC ratings were correlated. The results showed no significant relationship between CC measures and the TOEFL sections 2 and 3, which primarily measure linguistic competence. Both the TOEFL total and the Listening Comprehension (LC) subscore were found to correlate significantly with all CC measures, coefficients ranging from.34 to.56 (p 's $<$.01). The former correlated with the CC total at.39 (p 's $<$.01) while the latter correlated with the CC total at.52 (p 's $<$.001). Thus, LC was found to be the better estimator of the student's communicative competence than the TOEFL total score. However, when practical significance is concerned, both the total and LC scores account for only a limited amount of variance in common with CC ratings, suggesting that they do not serve as good predictors of communicative competence.
