This dissertation centers around a translation and exegesis of the Ledger on the Rhapsody (Fu-p'u), a ninth-century Chinese manual written for the instruction of those who were required to compose regulated rhapsodies for their civil service examinations. The Ledger is the only surviving Chinese work to detail the prosody and types of figurative language appropriate to the rhapsody. I have further used the information provided in the Ledger to translate and analyze five rhapsodies of the T'ang period. These additional translations include a rhapsody on a font goddess cited in the Ledger 's section on metaphor, a rhapsody composed by the emperor Li Lung-chi to accompany his rites to end a drought, and Tu Mu's "Rhapsody on * A-bang Palace.".Subjects--Topical Terms:
