The nanny industry has been around for many decades, and although it continues to grow rapidly there is little research or regulation to ensure the safety and well-being of parents, nannies, and children. The increase in negative publicity associated with in-home childcare providers has led many to view the nanny and parent relationship in a negative, unsafe, or untrusting manner. This research focused on the unique intimate components of the nanny parent relationship and hypothesized that when the vulnerabilities that make this employee-employer so unique are taken into account, it can reduce conflict and create the best in-home childcare experience for all parties. Jianxin and Daming (2009) and Baker (1996) discussed the effects of intimacy and the role of personality characteristics in nanny and parent employer relationship, and current research on in-home childcare indicated the need for a more reliable way to find the best in-home childcare for each unique family. The purpose of this study was to complete the early stages of development of the Parent Nanny Inventory (PNI), a measure designed to increase the match potential between a family and a nanny, reduce negative consequences of inadequate in-home childcare, and increase satisfaction for parents, nannies, and children. The psychometric properties and instrument structure for the Parent Nanny Inventory were examined. Exploratory Factor Analysis measured the underlying constructs of the Parent Nanny Inventory and indicated five factors. Items were loaded using oblimin rotations (Niell, 2008). The findings contributed to the continued development of the Parent Nanny Inventory in order to increase awareness of key components to creating successful parent and nanny matches.
