Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Kentucky, 2011.
This document serves two main purposes: (1) To provide a study of two selected voice therapies: Vocal Function Exercises and Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Therapy; (2) To aid students and teachers of both recently disordered and consistently healthy voices in gaining further insight into pedagogical choices during voice study. It is hoped that by studying the approaches of those who professionally rehabilitate the voice, one can understand the scientific rationale behind these approaches and apply this rationale to voice study. Examination of each of these therapies includes the therapy's origin and purpose, basic description, patient image and evaluation, reasoning behind the therapy, assessment, and transition from the clinic to the voice studio.

This exploration is meant to be a resource to those who are undergoing therapy and their teachers. General discussion of what a patient may experience in a voice center is provided so that those experiencing therapy may enter into this environment more knowledgably. By having a deeper understanding of the voice, both in healthy and unhealthy states, greater insight is possible into the application of vocalises and the study of literature; therefore, an account of vocal anatomy, laryngeal physiology, and selected disorders is provided.

Being an informed patient or patient's teacher is a vital component in aiding the full rehabilitation of the voice. Due to recent advances in voice science and voice therapy approaches, today's singer is able to receive treatment from a knowledgeable voice care team and can personally engage in this care to create the best chance for a full recovery. After the singer's therapy is complete, it is the dual responsibility of both performer and teacher to ensure the continued maintenance of healthy singing. It is hoped that this document serves as a source to both patient and teacher and assists them in making wise choices related to the patient's rehabilitation and to their overall pedagogical approach.
