This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of individuals who self-identified as Latin drag queens, focusing on their perceptions of family relationships related to the coming out process. The theoretical foundation used for this study was Intergenerational Theory (Bowen, 1988; McGoldrick & Gerson, 2005), a systemic theory of family interactional dynamics. The study sample consisted of 10 Latin drag queens living in the greater Chicago area. Two face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with each participant. Genograms, a visual depiction of intergenerational family relational patterns, were constructed for each interviewee following the first interview. Transcribed audiotaped interviews were analyzed from a phenomenological perspective.

The key findings from this study suggest that Latin drag queens in Chicago have experienced the transgenerational transmission of Latino values fulfill their family's expectations to support and care for younger siblings and financially support their parents. Latin drag queens have encountered difficulties establishing a relationship with a partner due to the incompatibility of a relationship and their show activity. Furthermore, the findings showed that Latin drag queens are able to express who they really are on stage and simultaneously feel they are able to express emotions when enacting their show. Participants noted a need to be understood as humans who feel and can be hurt, rather than, just individuals presenting a show. Finally, the findings indicated the need for bilingual (Spanish) counseling professionals who are open to understanding how the Latino culture and sexual orientation intertwined in family dynamics.
