The purpose of this case study was to gain an in-depth understanding about an ecological, site-specific art that works with natural systems to reduce ecological degradation. The philosophical, structural, and symbolic processes of one artist, whose artwork restores degraded watersheds, were examined and evaluated as public art. Data collection consisted of informally structured interviews, document analysis, and researcher observation and insight.

Available studies suggested a need for research that examines new forms of public art and provides models of a public art that restores natural ecosystems. The results of the study provide strategies for broadening the scope of public art, restoring natural ecosystems, engaging community members in local environmental issues, and promoting ecological literacy at the local level.
