This study examines the work of Septima P. Clark to determine the extent of her work with the Citizenship Schools of the American South during the mid-twentieth century. In addition, this study identifies four constructs based upon the work of Paulo Freire and cross references the Freirean constructs with the Citizenship School curriculum to determine possible implications of critical pedagogy and identification of Clark as a critical pedagogue.

This research is a qualitative historical case study that uses interviews and archival research to collect the necessary data. Several archives were used, including the Avery Research Center in Charleston, South Carolina and the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin. Interviews were conducted with individuals who were affiliated with the Citizenship Schools, including former teachers and former students.

Once the data was collected, the Clark curriculum was cross referenced with the Freirean constructs. Analysis of the data revealed that the Citizenship School curriculum has evidence of the Freirean constructs of conscientization , dialogue with a purpose, praxis, and banking versus problem solving, thus revealing Clark's work as an example of critical pedagogy and Clark as a critical pedagogue. Further analysis of the data revealed Clark's role with the Citizenship Schools to be both the curriculum designer and one of the teacher trainers. Clark was with the program from its beginning on Johns Island, South Carolina through its transference to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1961.
