Arts-integration is a method of teaching that employs the visual and performing arts as pathways to learning. The current study investigates the implementation of arts-integrated programs in early childhood educational settings with a focus on teacher perspectives and strategies implemented in art-integrated classrooms for typically and atypically developing children. The sample consisted of three art programs in the San Francisco Bay Area for young children ages three to ten years old; a series of observations were conducted in each art classroom and one instructor from each program was interviewed in a semi-structured interview. As hypothesized, teachers utilized a range of environmental and behavioral strategies through a child-centered approach. The findings from this study suggest that early childhood programs have the capacity to support the development of socio-emotional skills including, self-regulation, co-regulation, and empathy, as well as language and communication development, all of which support the development of lifetime learners. Art-integrated programs for young children with special needs directly impact the growth of regulated, self-aware individuals, and also serve as catalysts for social change by supporting social-emotional development of children who are at-risk for learning.
